How to Get a Medical Cannabis Card in Virginia

Plain-language guide to qualifying conditions, the application process, and where to fill your prescription in Virginia.

Virginia medical cannabis card guide

Those wishing to participate in Virginia's medical cannabis program must:

  • Be a permanent or temporary resident of the Commonwealth;

  • Be at least 18 years of age or have the consent of a parent/legal guardian;

  • Have a valid government-issued ID; and

  • Have a condition or disease that may benefit from the use of cannabis products.

A licensed practitioner determines if the patient has a condition or disease that may benefit from the use of cannabis products.

The law no longer requires a patient to receive a registration card from the CCA. The CCA does not require patients to register, and it is not required to access cannabis products at licensed dispensaries.
