What is the difference between medical cannabis and adult use cannabis?

Accepted Answer

Medical cannabis is used by people with a qualifying medical condition who have registered under a state’s medical cannabis program. Patients must carry a practitioner or state issued medical cannabis card in order to purchase and consume cannabis for medical reasons. While some medical products have higher-potency, the cannabis itself is not different from what can be purchased for recreational adult-use.

As of 4/19/2026, MA shoppers can now purchase the following: Flower: Up to 2 ounces (56 grams) per transaction, doubled from the previous 1-ounce limit. Concentrates: Up to 10 grams of active THC (e.g., vape cartridges, dabs). Edibles: Up to 1,000 mg of THC (1 gram). Mixed Purchases: You may mix products, but the total cannot exceed the 2-ounce flower equivalent (e.g., 1 ounce of flower + 5 grams of concentrate).

Yes, Massachusetts law permits you to carry up to two ounces of marijuana. You may possess up to 10 ounces in your home.

Yes, you can visit multiple times in a single day as long as you adhere to the legal purchase limits across all purchases combined for the day.

No. Consumption is prohibited on all Ayr Dispensaries property. Cannabis use is restricted to private property; public consumption is generally prohibited unless in designated licensed spaces.

No, it is illegal to transport cannabis across state borders, even if both states have legalized its use.
